The Caterpillar 6060 Front Shovel in
Coal Configuration weighs around 600 tonnes.
This model is
in
Coal Configuration.
Packaging
The model comes in
the usual excellent Diecast Masters packaging. There is
an outer shipping carton which contains a tin which is
protected by a nylon bag. The tin is high quality
and includes pictures and details about the real
machine.
The review model had no defects or missing parts.
A simple instruction sheet describes how the operator
can be inserted in the cab, and a tool is provided to
help with the task.
Detail
The undercarriage has a plastic base plate, and the
underside of the body is detailed. The track frames
have the rollers modelled but they are non-functional.
The metal crawler tracks have shaped track pads.
The metal cab has a plastic roof with a beacon light.
The interior detail is reasonable for the scale and
includes an operator. Outside, the mirror is
silvered and the handrails are plastic, as they are
throughout the model. having said that, they look
reasonably good considering the scale.
The body details include sharp graphics and the grilles
are formed of indentations in the castings painted
black. A plastic hydraulic stair runs down towards the
rear although it cannot fold up as much as the real
machine.
On top equipment is modelled in black plastic and looks
good. Textured surfaces add to the detail.
Soft hydraulic lines run to the boom foot, and the
hydraulics detailing on the stick looks impressive.
Connection pins on the boom and stick are painted.
The two-part shovel is a very detailed
casting.
Features
The tracks are spring loaded for tension, and roll well
by hand but with too much friction to roll on most
surfaces.
It rotates very smoothly.
The movement of the boom and stick is controlled by some
stiff hydraulics and good-looking poses can be held.
The opening shovel works very well.
The access stair can be lowered or folded up for
operating mode.
Quality
It is a surprisingly heavy model with plastic used
appropriately.
The paint is very good and the graphics are sharp.
Price
It is fully priced reflecting the heavy metal content.
Overall
It is good to see Diecast Masters produce a model of one
of Caterpillar's largest machines. Although it is
1:87 scale it is an impressive looking well made model,
and would look great with a mining truck in the same
scale.
Footnotes
The model became available in January 2024.
